San Miniato al Tedesco

September 1533: Pope Clement VII, together with 13 cardinals and a huge host of bishops and members of the papal court, is on his way to the wedding of his relative Catherine de’ Medici to Henry, the future King Henry II of France. Before boarding the 40 ships making the arduous crossing to Nice, the group stops in San Miniato al Tedesco, a small town approximately 40 km east of Florence. On 22 September, the Pope meets Michelangelo in the town, commissioning him to paint the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. The Pope’s demands of the artist create a major personal dilemma for Michelangelo, but he agrees to take on what is, for him, such an important commission – with fatal results.
